FALL OF AMERICA ?

           American Power by sztyui.

IT’S NO SECRET, the markets are melting down, but the upheaval we are experiencing is more than a financial crisis, however large. Here is a historic geopolitical shift, in which the balance of power in the world is being altered irrevocably. The era of American global leadership, reaching back to the Second World War, is being affected.

America’s super-power status depends on many factors. It was achieved through dominance in military, economic, political, intellectual, technological and cultural realms. Some experts have been saying in recent years, and with the falling US economy, that power could shift to those nations with huge emerging economies.

Has a new era begun?

Now signs of changing times are more stark, with world leaders frustrated and even angry over a global financial crisis many see as caused by American policy mistakes. Meanwhile the monetary meltdown is likely to force cuts in the American public and private science, military and technology investment — a cornerstone of the American economic engine that has historically driven the nation’s preeminence.

Most people have long accepted that the development of new economies that goes with globalisation will undermine America’s central position in the world. The EU (European union) is proving to be the main competitor.  And now we have a new breed of Super Power groupings waiting in the wings. IRC (India-Russia-China) and BRIC (Brazil-Russia-India-China).

The present combined GDP of India and China based on PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) is already bigger than that of the US, while the BRIC countries have among them a larger GDP than the European Union.

There is no doubt that in the foreseeable future, the economic and military potential of these new centers of power will inevitably get converted into political clout and will strengthen multipolarity. These countries would likely have less respect and fear for the Americans.

What’s in question is, would America loose its world number one status soon? Would the European union, or the emerging economies (China, Brazil, Russia, …..) be capable of reducing American influence on world business, and be the new “number one” ?

  1. Hi, Many people want the Americans to fall. They are having some bad times, but i’m confident they would stand right back.
Only the European union, with a strong and firm leadership, like what the current French president ( Mr. Sarkozy) is doing, can be a world dominant force. China, Russia, Brazil, and the rest won’t be able to stand the pressure, and though they are economically advancing, they are not first class societies.

  2. AMERICA NO DOUBT IS THE STRONGEST POWER NATION IN THE WORLD AND THINK WOULD ALWAYS REMAIN STRONGEST BECAUSE THEY THEY ARE LIKE THE WORLD MOST EVER LOVED COUNTRY AND FIRST IN ALMOST ALL ACTIVITIES.AMERICAN AS IT FALLS SO IT STANDS THEIR TOGETHERNESS AND ONES STILL REMAINS AND ALWAYS THEY KEEP TO THEIR FAITH.NO ONE DAY WILL AMERICA EVER FALL.OTHER EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES ONLY CLAIM TO BE MORE THAN AMERICAN BUT IT CAN NEVER BE SO.

  3. THE MORE BAD TIMES AMERICA WILL HAVE ONLY MAKES IT STRONGER AND UNITED AND AMERICA REMAINS FOREVER THE STRONGEST NATION IN THE WORLD.

  4. Eric, great topic to discuss, I’m mad of these stuff!!!! Let me put it in this way. This is the first time since 1953 that a U.S. Secretary of State has visited Libya, Regarding to reports Rice may sign a trade and investment deal during her visit but the political analysts say the major signal is to start up a new era in U.S.-Libyan relations that have been considered by decades of mistrust and violence. On the other hand, after the 23 years of marking Libya as the region of violence, Libya and Russia have signed a deal on civil nuclear co-operation during a visit to Moscow by Muammar Gaddafi the Libyan president.
Now you give me the answer! What is going on?!!! All the ex-terrorism countries are going to be the good friend of Uncle Sam? It sounds weird, but let’s takes a look out of the box. The ex-terrorism countries (Iran will join them in a short time) can have nuclear facilities “as Libya got the approval” BUT under the supervision of Uncle Sam!!! This is going to be the new version of colonial system which gives the States its previous authority and more cash in pocket 😉

  5. Great topic dude! Yes, America is having some negative times, but tell me, who isn’t? The US is still number one, and make no mistake, if she’s attacked, she would fight back.
I can only see the EU stepping up as number one, but tthat would be years to come, and would need some serious european endeavours and risk taking, which i clearly don’t see now.
As for china, no way!! They can’t even make safe milk!! who is ready to trust such people?
Russia has tried, is trying, and would keep on trying.
The US might drop some places now, but wouldn’t fall.

  6. Bardia, true Condi RICE visited Libya, and is taking her out of the list. so, playing soft with ‘rough states’ is a sign of weakness now? crazy.
Gaddafi sponsored the lockerbie attack, and even if u seemingly hate the Americans, have a thinking for the innocent people who lost their lives!
Just a rough guess, are you Iranian, or Pakistani? I bet you are one of them!

  8. woo Eric, i know you love politics!! nice article, but i’m not surprised its from you.
Fall of America? Many are asking themselves that question now, but remember, the wall street crash of 1929 was far more devastating than this one, and the US woke up stronger. I guess you bet on your man OBAMA to sought this one out. Its gonna take the US much courage, a little less activity on the world stage for a period, but they would come out even stronger, BET ON THAT.

  9. I would say that Business Economics class helped me a little on this comment. Looking at the statistic where Mr. Kui showed us in class where America has ‘THE HIGHEST’ trade deficits. So let me ask you back the question on whether would emerging countries overtake America as the number one in the business world? With owing from them, I doubt. By overtaking America, it is like throwing money into the drain. Moreover, with the new economy crisis that is slowly hitting the world, countries would not have the right time to do so in this one-year or so. Until then, America might have time to build their self up before any country decides to overtake them. If ever there is a competitor beside America, it would be the European Union at the current position.

  10. In my opinion, America wouldn’t looses their power to still be number one because I belief that America still strong same like before even now they face crisis and they will become even stronger than before.

  11. Kingdoms and Empires come and go… the Roman, the British…

America is the current dominant empire and it is not likely to be challenged for that position for quite some time.

Apart from economic and military dominance, American ‘cultural’ maturity will ensure its position of leadership for many decades.

By ‘culture’, I am not just thinking about their music and film industry; but rather, their culture of thought and aware and discussion over issues of history, philosophy, politics, the arts, and so forth.

Many countries, including the other great economic powers of today are still focusing on the ‘money’ side of life. There is more to ‘greatness’ than a pocket full of money!

  12. America is the country who is holding the whole world economic. But now a days their economic is coming down because they spend lots of money for the Iraq war. Now they have new government and if this government use money like previous government must be they will be loss their positions.

  13. The country’s leading intelligence organization said in its report that the advance of western-style democracy is far from guaranteed in an unpredictable world. The National Intelligence Council analysis “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World” will serve as a sobering reminder to President-Elect Barack Obama of the challenges he faces leading a country that might no longer be able to “call the shots alone”.

“The international system, as constructed following the Second World War, will be almost unrecognizable by 2025, owing to the rise of emerging powers, a globalizing economy, an historic transfer of wealth from West to East, and the growing influence of non-state actors,” the report said. “Although the United States is likely to remain the single most powerful actor, the United States’ relative strength – even in the military realm, will decline and US leverage will become more strained.”

Researchers predicted China and India were likely to join the United States atop a multi-polar world and compete for influence. Russia’s potential was less certain, but Iran, Turkey and Indonesia were also seen gaining power. The use of nuclear weapons will grow increasingly likely by 2025, the report found, forecasting a tense, unstable world shadowed by war. “The world of the near future will be subject to an increased likelihood of conflict over scarce resources, including food and water, and will be haunted by the persistence of rogue states and terrorist groups with greater access to nuclear weapons.”

The report also predicted that some African and South Asian states may wither away altogether, and organized crime could take over at least one state in central Europe. Struggling to find a bright spot, researchers concluded that terrorism could decline if “economic growth continues in the Middle East and youth unemployment is reduced”. However, it concluded, “opportunities for mass-casualty terrorist attacks using chemical, biological, or less likely, nuclear weapons will increase as technology diffuses and nuclear power programs expand”.

Based on a survey of trends by analysts from all US intelligence agencies around the world, it was more pessimistic about status of the world’s superpower than the four previous outlooks that have been made public.

The current financial crisis on Wall Street is the beginning of a global economic rebalancing, the report found, predicting that the dollar’s role as the major world currency will weaken to the point where it becomes a “first among equals”. Officials said the report was timed to be ready for Barack Obama when he takes office on January 20. (Economic Time)

  14. Well…! Every country economic will fall and grow up because it is economic it can’t be same all the time. But when we discuses about American economic they are not same as other countries. America have the strong power to control their economic. But now America face the economic problem little bit seriously because of Iraq and Afghanistan war. Even though they fight with any country they have strong foundation on their economic and they have the smart leaders to make the correct decision.

  15. I do agree with Srikanth in certain extent. America is strong but not for long. Today, economic of country like China is going stronger and stronger. Furthermore, economic crisis heightened the numbers of people that are unemployment. People can spend money without job. Economic wont grow if consumers never spend. But in my opinion, everything will go right. Lets see what new plan will be coming out to save the economic of America.

  16. Well,I would agree to a certain extend that America economy are always at the top but in today’s financial crisis and falls in economy which affected the most is America.

    The sad fact is, however, that at least some of the predictions are going to come true. And I think there are some other problems that are going to come to the forefront that haven’t attracted a lot of attention yet. I will offer some signs of hope, however, so this won’t be a totally depressing tale;

    1. The budget deficit: it’s worse than you think
    2. The aging of America and the upcoming generational battle
    3. Cheap energy: here today, gone tomorrow
    4. The upcoming water shortage
    5. Societal polarization: the left and the right grow farther apart
    6. The rich get richer
    7. Technology: some hope for the future

    http://www.buttery.org/mark/rants/decline-and-fall.html

This signs shows the Fall of America. Therefore,we will see how would the new elected President of America,Barack Obama would fix this problem back to stability of America’s Economy!!!

  17. HI nice topic bro but also very hard to comment.
as we know AMERICAN is the number one in the world ,how to defined the position of the country the most important is technology and the economic and the education . AMERICAN has strong technology and high education in the world , but flowing the economic crisis the may loss the economic but the still a number one in the world ,Brazil-Russia-India-China coming up but they still need time to development for the education and the technology .in my opinion AMERICAN can keep the position until 2050.

  18. this dude named bardia,
i think this is the wrong blog for you. Go to an anti – american, or muslim blog, and write your stuffs like ‘colonial america’, cuz not everybody is un-educated, and one sided to listen to your pathetic, ill-advised nazists comments.

  19. In any interrogation and mitigation and any court there is the plaintiff and the defendant. The plaintiff has to say his word and the defended has to defend from the given word. I don’t think that you are allowed in any court to speak out like a kid. So be a man and tell me why you are disagree with my statement and tell your idea instead of giving fallacious words

  20. hahaha, ‘al quieda bardia’ wants to be brave. You got it all wrong dude, without disrespect, your comments are out of place,one-sided, uninformed, and as we technically put it,’bullshit’.

  21. The banking crisis is upending American dominance of the financial markets and world politics. The industrialized countries are sliding into recession, the era of turbo-capitalism is coming to an end and US military might is ebbing. Still, this is no time to gloat.
There are days when all it takes is a single speech to illustrate the decline of a world power. A face can speak volumes, as can the speaker’s tone of voice, the speech itself or the audience’s reaction. Kings and queens have clung to the past before and humiliated themselves in public, but this time it was merely a United States president.
Or what is left of him.
After President Bush’s whirlwind tour of Europe, it got me thinking about the health of America’s influence on the world stage since Bush came to power.

This administration has divided once staunch allies, went in virtually alone without the critical international support and approval and created the modern day debacle that is Iraq. In the eyes of the world community America’s reputation has diminished and it has created differences between allies. We see the effects of this today with the EU’s lifting of China’s arms ban, their diplomatic approach to Iran and Russia selling nuclear material to Iran. Bush’s tour already looks like it has been unsuccessful and the European nations are no longer filing behind america and towing the line.

Europe is now taking a different path than America and on the world stage is defining it’s own role. China is an increasingly growing in economic power and it’s military capabilities have exponentially improved over the last 15 years, soon it will be strong enough to take on Taiwan. The Bush Administrations sabre rattling is only making things worse and China will only continue to invest even more into improving their military capability which inturn will greatly increase their influence and power in the entire region.

The Bush Administration’s rhetoric of the ‘axis of evil’ has contributed to the supposed development of nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula and in Iran, which could spark off a global arms race in the entire Asian continent and may make the NPT worthless.

Today we see that the Bush Administration is eyeing Iran with Bush’s “all options are on the table” and unmanned drone’s already probing defences and it’s recent rhetoric and exploitation of what has happened in Lebanon to villify Syria in the world communities eyes so that it may overthrow the government.

The US military is already overstretched and has no near term exit strategy for Iraq, yet the Bush Administration continues to eye it’s neighbours as potential targets, risking creating a massive insurgent triangle.

Economically, the US budget deficit is running into the hundreds of billions while in 2000 it was at a healthy 200 billion surplus. National government debt is at around $8 trillion, the highest in the world and total domestic debt is at approximately $37 trillion. There is a huge trade deficit and China is doing extremely well in the US. The dream run of the 90s and the Clinton Administration’s fiscal conservatism have all but been thrown out the window with the Bush Administrations policy of cutting taxes while making the government bigger. The US dollar has lost major ground and has lost much confidence and many commodities and nations are changing to the Euro.

Politically, there seems to be a wishing among the populace for the ‘old days’ as grass roots conservatives have gained considerable popularity among the American populace. The 2000 election debacle was a sign that all was not well in America’s democracy. Non-mandatory voting has made a minority of the nation decide who runs the nation.

Deregulation of the US media has put the hands of the press into the hands of a few corporate giants under the ‘veil’ of a “free” press. Each giant promotes it’s own political and corporate agenda and news stories are skewed and censorship is becoming commonplace for stories that hurt the corporations bottom line. We live in a world today where the state-run media stations by the Industrialized west are the one’s who have reporters who’s hands are not tied.

All these conclusions I have come to from what I have seen and gathered lately make me believe that we are seeing the decline of America as the global superpower and as the leader of the Western World. I believe the Bush Administration is the major cause of this, as what has seemingly happened is that the PNAC (Project For A New American Century) Agenda (invade Iraq, exploit a pearl-harbour type event to get the support of a more pro-active role in preserving America’s superpower status) has actually been the first nails in the coffin of the American hegemony and the return of the bipolar world or even a tripolar world.
